What You Need To Know Before Buying Car Insurance

What You Need To Know Before Buying Car Insurance

Kadri Egbeyemi January 22, 2020

Sometimes it can be tempting to buy the same car insurance that your friends have. It sounds straightforward, but you should think twice before doing this. Insurance companies have varying rates. The speed of processing also differs from company to company, so it’s wise to shop around first before buying one.

You should not rush the process of getting auto insurance. You need to know the right questions to ask. Not every agent is going to give you the best deals. You’re lucky to find good ones when you first do your research.

Ask for the coverage

The starting coverage you need to get is whatever is required by the law in your state. Generally, liability coverage is the minimum requirement. But there are more coverages to consider like collision, comprehensive, personal injury protection and more.

Ask your risk assessment

Not everyone gets the same rate. Rates will depend on a lot of things that can pose a risk to the insurance company. Asking questions and plenty of details is a move that companies make to make sure they don’t lose a lot.

Using personal data like your age, gender, driving history, credit score, and more they will determine if you will be considered a risky driver. If you’re elderly or a teenager, companies tend to charge more. The same goes true if you are living in a crime-infested neighborhood.

Ask which driver the policy covers

A lot of people don’t consider this. What if you have a teenage son or daughter who got your car totaled? Will you be getting insurance coverage? What if you crash a car that you don’t own?

Your agent needs to know the answer to these questions. Different companies have different ways of handling insurance for rental cars. Find out who the insurance will cover if ever there is a change of driver.

Ask your deductible

Claiming insurance after getting into an accident means paying a sum of money called deductibles. You need to pay this before your insurance company hands you the money. There is also a way to reduce the amount of money you spend annually. You can also do this by increasing your deductibles.

If you plan on raising your deductible, make sure you can still pay it. The company won’t be able to issue repair money if you can’t pay it. Accidents are highly unpredictable, so you need to know your deductibles.

Ask for possible discounts

Companies offer varying discounts and promos. Agents don’t usually tell their customers about this on the spot. You need to ask them about it and make sure you are qualified to apply.

Having some safety devices on your vehicles like alarm systems and anti-theft devices make you less of a risk. These devices also make you eligible for discounts. There’s also something called the good student discount for those who are earning high grades in school. There are a ton of discounts available – all you have to do is ask.

These are several factors you need to know when looking for car insurance. Remember to ask the agents any questions you may have. Choose your auto insurance wisely.
